About Hugs
Hugs for Horses, located at the Georgetown Equestrian Center in Georgetown,  is a therapeutic horseback riding program which has, since 1987, provided children and adults with physical, cognitive, and social or behavioral disabilities in the Georgetown area the opportunity to grow and develop by riding horses.

Rona Jacobs, owner and renowned professional horse trainer and riding instructor,  realized long ago that horseback riding uniquely encourages balance, flexibility, and trunk strength, and develops motor planning skills, self-confidence, a sense of responsibility and compassion for living things, which are especially important to focus on for those with physical, cognitive, and social or behavioral challenges. After obtaining certification as an instructor for disabled riders, Rona and her core of volunteers started the Hugs for Horses therapeutic horseback riding program.

The families of the approximately 40 special needs riders currently benefiting from the program are never asked to pay for their riding. Hugs’ basic operation is supported by Georgetown County United Way.  Grants from the Frances P. Bunnelle Foundation and Prince George Episcopal Church Women’s Group and donations from individuals have allowed the program to expand to 5 group sessions, purchase a special equestrian lift, and the obtain  consultative services of a joyful physical therapist for the riders.
