How Hugs for Horses operates

Hugs for Horses Therapeutic Riding Program is able to function in an extremely effective and cost efficient way. 
  • The program operates under the very supportive umbrella of the non-profit agency, the Georgetown County Board of Disabilities and Special Needs.  Hence, the Hugs Program does not incur the bulk the administrative costs associated with being an independent entity.
  • The Hugs program essentially leases from the Georgetown Equestrian Center the facilities, horses, and paid personnel only for the actual time Hugs' classes are in session.    Similar programs use their funding to pay for the 24/7 cost of horses' board, facilities, barn manager salaries, instructor salaries, etc.
  • Our core of volunteers is generous with their time and talents!
Hence, Hugs can provide free-to-the-riders year-round therapeutic and recreational riding for an average cost of $30 per rider per session, as compared to a listed cost of up to $150 and more per rider in a group setting from other facilities in the state.   Most therapeutic riding facilities have a participant co-pay that is more than Hugs total cost of services!
                              
 


Need your donations

Times are tough for everybody, including us!  Our budget contains no fluff!  We make the absolute most of every dollar donated to us to directly enable more children and adults with disabilities the opportunity to grow stronger and more able physically, intellectually, emotionally, and socially by riding horses.   Therefore, with a severe reduction in donations this year, the Hugs program has had to stop serving some of our riders, hopefully just temporarily.  We also have a waiting list of individuals with disabilities and special education groups from the school system that we are unable to serve.  The need is greater than ever, but our funding resources are stretched so thin!

What your contribution will do!
  • $30 will enable for a child or adult with disabilities to ride for an hour session in a group setting.
  • $65 will enable a child or adult with disabilities who cannot be served in a group setting to ride for an hour in a private session.
  • $100 will allow us to engage the services of our amazing physical therapist for a group class to consult on ways we can make each rider's experience more effective.
  • $110 will enable a child or adult with disabilities to ride for a month in a group class.
  • $450 will pay for four or five people to ride in a group class for a month.
  • $500 will buy equipment and therapeutic toys we need to replace every year.
  • $1,550 will pay for liability insurance for a year for the Hugs Program.
  • $7,500 will enable a class of 10-12 special education students to ride for an entire school year!
